Gwen Ifill’s Book, “The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama” Released on Inauguration Day

During the Presidential debates of ‘08, some complained that Gwen Ifill, a moderator for one of the debates, was due to release a book featuring Obama on Inauguration Day.  Among those who complained was Michelle Malkin:

Try as she might to deflect questions about her impartiality, her biases — and her conflict of interest — are clear. But don’t you dare breathe a word about any of this. You know what will happen if you do… RACIST!

Well, Ms. Malkin, here’s the book that won Obama the debate and, hence, the Presidency:

The book is structured loosely around four prominent figures. Cory Booker, Newark’s mayor… Deval Patrick, the Massachusetts governor… Congressman Artur Davis… and, of course, Obama himself.  While Obama is the most visible member of the breakthrough generation, he is hardly alone. “The bench is deep,” Ifill writes, “crammed elbow to elbow with mayors, state lawmakers and other rising stars poised to grab at the next brass ring.”

The fact that Obama received 67 percent of the Latino and 43 percent of the white vote … leads Ifill to wonder whether gerrymandering is still necessary. “If whites will vote for blacks, the need for elaborately drawn Congressional districts that maximize the black vote declines accordingly,” she writes.

In bookstores on Inauguration Day, as promised.

I’m sure Ifill’s writing a book that was, in part, about Obama had nothing at all to do with anything even remotely connected to the Presidential election. Nothing to see here, move on. Not even the slightest appearance of impropriety.

Obama won. We’ve got hope, change, and optimism in this country again. It would be more seemly to enjoy it instead of running over road that’s already been covered in order to stick it to a pundit who had a dissenting opinion.

I feel that considering how vociferous some complainers were about the book, that the book is actually coming out on Inauguration Day is news and worthy of a post.
